Ivica Mandić was born in Split on 13 June 1948. He graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Split in 1973. In 1981, he defended his master's thesis at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and his doctor's thesis in 1987 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Zagreb. His affiliation in the capacity of an assistant from 1973 to 1987 was with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, Split, followed by that of assistant professor from 1987 to 1992. In 1992 he was elected an associate professor and in 1997 a full professor in Split. Over the 1995-96 period he was the technical director of the Maritime Center for Electronics in Split. In 1996 he was nominated as deputy minister for higher education in the Ministry of Science and Technology. At his Alma Mater he lectures on the subject of automatic control at the under- and postgraduate levels. The scientific and professional work of Professor Mandic is aimed at automatic control of complex processes, robotics and the automatic control of special purpose equipment. He has behind him more than 100 scientific and technical papers.

 

He acquired further education in many reputable world centers. In the process, on several international research projects he has established scientific and technical collaboration between the Republic of Croatia and Brasil, Japan, China and South Africa.

 

Professor Mandić is a member of several national and international societies (KoREMA, Croatian Robotics Society, CROSS, IEEE, RIA etc.). In 1990 he set up in Split the »Hrvatski krug« (Croatian circle), a supraparty association of intellectuals, scientists, artists and businessmen, As a volunteer, in 1991 he joined the Split Police Department's reserve force. As an influential figure in the society he was nominated to the chairmanship of Management Boards/Managerial Councils of several institutions. A 1991 War of Defense Memorial Medal has been awarded to him. In 1995, the president of the republic awarded him the Order of Danica Hrvatska and the Figure of' Rudjer Boskovic medals for having »merits for the liberation and development of Croatia and for its good relations with other countries«.
